Porsche 928, neglected but lovely

A big butt, a mouth of a shark and frog-eyes, that’s how the Porsche 928 looks…and that’s why I love it so much!

For a car launched in 1977 – and the only sports-car granted “car of the year” in 1978 – I find it absolutely modern even today. At least for the body. For the interior, well it’s a bit more outdated but that’s not a big deal since I prefer the external outlook of cars. Compared with other Porsches, especially the 911 turbo, the 928 GTS had more or less the same performances in that time in terms of in line acceleration: 13,30 sec for 0-400m and 24,70 sec for 0-1000m. Things were less easy on race tracks since its running weight of 1.700 kg was way too much to allow great performances. So, yes there was a debate between 928 and 911 lovers, and very often people would like one and not the other. But for me both are great, even if they don’t target same usage: 928 GT is great for Grand Tourism, and 911 GT3 is great for track. Maybe the new 991 will close this argument and be good for both, especially the next to come GT3? That’s another (911) story, let’s talk about the rest of the Porsche world.

In the Grand Tourism side, it’s such a shame that average Porsche users will now buy Panamera or Cayenne. Both are best-sellers and both are good for the families, especially for fathers happy to drive fast when they are alone. Nobody would think to criticize these 2 recent cars among Porsche fans, whereas many of them were bashing 928 enthusiasts in the nineties.

But hey, isn’t a 928 looking much more cool and sporty than the new Panamera and Cayenne ? Which one would YOU buy today?
